What you should know about Kawerau District Council

The governance model under the Local Government Act 2002 is representative democracy. The community elects individuals to make judgements on behalf of the community about what will promote community well being. It helps the Council make better informed decisions on behalf of the community. The local government commissioner did not make any changes to the boundaries or the name of Kawerau District Council on November when many other local authorities were forced to amalgamate.
The Council can delegate to a committee, member or officer of the Council any of its duties, powers and responsibilities, with some exceptions listed below , so the business of the Council is carried out as effectively and efficiently as possible. It was agreed that a Town Commissioner be appointed to exercise Local Government Control and some seven recommendations of the Commission were embodied in legislation later enacted by the Government as the Kawerau and Murupara Township Acts 1953. Over 80 of those on the electoral roll turned out to vote and in a formal ceremony on 30th November 1959, Mr. Boyce was appointed Mayor, with Messrs Ion, Forbes, Boss, Hardie and Mrs Flower appointed to the five Commissioner positions. The Tarawera River plunges 65m down a sheer cliff before tumbling over bush lined rapids.
The Tarawera River drains Lake Tarawera to the Eastern Bay of Plenty and falls approximately 30m in the 59km from the lake to the sea. The Mayor is elected by the district as a whole and shares the same responsibilities as other members of the Council.
